Community Spread of COVID-19 in San Pedro

What led to the lockdown and curfew is an additional fourteen cases of COVID-19 that were identified overnight, bringing the total number of active cases of the virus in Belize to fifty-three. An additional thirteen cases were from San Pedro and one in Belmopan.  Of the thirteen in San Pedro, ten were linked to the case detected on Sunday and one to Tuesday’s patient.  There are two other cases that are symptomatic that were picked up during a routine flu clinic and enhanced surveillance; one of these cases is a child. Since there are at least twenty symptomatic cases in San Pedro, the Epidemiological Unit of the Ministry of Health has declared community spread on the island which goes into a lockdown this Friday.

“We went from forty-eight cases one week ago to eighty-six cases now with three districts being of primary interest; Corozal, Orange Walk and Belize. In the Belize district it’s primarily the town of San Pedro. We have fifty-three active cases now and two of those hospitalized; one in Orange Walk and one in Corozal. From the fourteen cases, I know yesterday when we were leaving we did manage to confirm a total of fourteen cases when the final lab process went through. The breakdown is as follows: out of the fourteen cases, one person is linked to the hospitalized case at the northern regional hospital; that is an active cluster in village of Santa Martha. The person identified lives in Belmopan. There are two persons linked to the case identified in San Pedro on Tuesday. This is a second cluster which is not related to the initial case we had identified on Sunday. So we are talking about cluster number two if you will in San Pedro where we found two other cases and this is tied to a church for which contact tracing started earlier in the week and we anticipate further samples to be processed later on today. Ten cases are linked to the case in San Pedro identified on Sunday. Some samples are still pending and those are coming out in the next couple of minutes. There is one other case in san Pedro that is not linked to the two active clusters in San Pedro. So contact tracing for this other case is ongoing. So based on the above, the epidemiology unit is able to confirm that there is community transmission in the town of san Pedro. For now, other than the cluster that we are looking for on Sunday, we are also following an active cluster for those that are related to the church, a specific church in San Pedro where we are told between twenty to thirty persons could be having signs and symptoms.”
