Shakeem Humes Executed Outside his Home at the 8 Miles Community

A gang related murder occurred on Wednesday night. Skakeem Humes Senior was shot multiple times and died at the K.H.M.H. undergoing treatment.  The police say that three men drove up to the Eight Miles community on the George Price Highway. The murder victim was repairing a vehicle along with friends when someone called out to him and a barrage of bullets was fired in his direction. While Humes Senior has had brushes with the law, police believe he got caught in an ongoing gang feud. Here is News Five’s Duane Moody with a report.

Duane Moody, Reporting

Just after nine p.m. on Wednesday, the calm of the night in the Eight Miles Community on the George Price Highway was shattered by the sound of gunshots in the Westlake area of the village. When the echoes from the blasts subsided, twenty-seven-year-old Shakeem Humes Senior laid gasping for air on the dirt road in front of his residence. A red SUV reportedly drove up to the area and three gunmen alighted the vehicle and opened fire on an unsuspecting Humes Senior. Some say that Humes was shot as many as ten times to the body; he was rushed to the K.H.M.H., but succumbed to the injuries while receiving treatment.

Supt. Alejandro Cowo, O.C., C.I.B., Eastern Division

“Police visited the K.H.M.H. and observed Shakeem Humes with apparent gunshot wounds to his body. He was being treated but unfortunately passed away minutes later. What police gather so far is that he was at his house along with other friends doing some repairs to a vehicle when he was called out to the street side and persons from inside a vehicle fired shots at his direction causing his fatal injuries.”

Surveillance footage in the area captured the incident, in which someone from within the vehicle called out to Humes Senior before the fatal shooting was carried out. Humes was sitting on this refrigerator just beyond the perimeter fence to his home.

“They came down the street off the road, came out, I guess yelled his name, he stand up on this refridge where we sits every night, so he was being monitored. Three men came out and they just did what they had to do or what they came to do.”

The incident has taken a huge toll on the family because his older sibling was also murdered in August 2018 in Belize City. Humes Senior was the father of four boys; he was no stranger to the law, having been shot as a teen in 2008 and later having beaten several murder charges.

“In the street, yes he is from George Street. I am not saying that he is a good child, but he’s done his stuff and we know that—we’ve seen him on the news. Some stuff that he didn’t do. But like I said, (crying) it’s hard because my little brother that they killed at the clinic was gonna be like two years, thirty-first of this month right here. And older brother birthday was the fourth and now they killed his brother on the fifth. Everybody know “Bap” – he’s loving; he is caring regardless of whatever. They took away somebody great from us, from the Baizar family, from the Humes family.”

Police investigation suggests that the motive for the shooting is internal gang feud.

Supt. Alejandro Cowo

“We know that there is an ongoing rivalry, internal feud against them and we suspect that that murder might be related to that internal feud that they are having at this moment. Yes, we know him, police have dealt with him on several occasion, but as I have mentioned, it is an internal issue that they are going through and we suspect that that might have caused or led to his death.”

Concerned about possible retaliation, Superintendent Alejandro Cowo says that several persons have been picked up so far.

Supt. Alejandro Cowo

“From last night, additional police were sent to the Eight Miles area and I know that at this moment, there are several houses that are being searched in that area, detaining persons that can possibly lead to a retaliation or anything like that. Even in Belize City, in the area where this gang is concentrated, police are highly alert in that area.”

The police department issued a bulletin in which crime stoppers Belize is offering a reward of two thousand dollars for information leading to an arrest and charge of the culprits in this latest murder. Duane Moody for News Five.
