Boating Accident Victim Dies

Kyle Carias

On Wednesday we reported on a boating incident that happened off the coast of Caye Caulker and left a teenager critical. Well, tonight we report that the victim Fifteen-year-old student Kyle Carias of Caye Caulker died while receiving treatment at the hospital on Wednesday night. Kyle suffered a large cut to the forehead when he fell overboard and hit his head on the boat’s propeller. Superintendent Alejandro Cowo tells us what police know so far about this incident.

Supt. Alejandro Cowo, O.C., C.I.B., Eastern Division

“What we understand is that he was on a small skiff near Caye Caulker Village when a larger boat passed by and the waves from that boat lashed the small skiff causing him to fall off and he was injured by the propeller. He was taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.”

“Sir, these guys, were they socializing, drinking – what were they doing out there on that boat?”

“It was him along with the family members; most of them were minors. We understand that they were putting up a water slide in the area and that is when the other boat passed. I believe it was at a high speed that caused the big wave to lash on the smaller skiff.”

Andrea Polanco

“Is this something that investigators are ruling as an accident?”

Supt. Alejandro Cowo

“When it comes to anything with marine, we normally contact the port authority and they have assured us that they will be conducting an investigation into this matter. Likewise, police are investigating and have contacted the family members and we were able to get an idea of what transpired yesterday.”
