9 Private Sector Companies Donate Vehicle to Police Department for Contraband Fight

A group of Belizean private sector companies made a significant contribution to the Belize Police Department today in its fight against the illicit contraband trade. The forty-five thousand-dollar investment comes in the form of a 2020 Ford Ranger Crew Cab pickup for which the keys were handed over to Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams. Speaking on behalf of the companies was Marketing Manager of Belize Estate and Company, David Vasquez, who says that the illegal trade continues to put a financial dent on local businesses. ComPol Chester Williams pointed out that the vehicle will assist the department in its fight against COVID-19 in the area where illegal border jumping and contraband activities are occurring.

“I had reached out to the various business places and had asked them if it is that they would like to come together and assist in the donation of a vehicle to the police so that we can use to patrol the San Victor area which you would know is a very hot spot area for contraband and border jumping. And I must say that the business community responded very quickly and said that they were willing to come together and purchase the vehicle for the police. And that is where we are today where the purchase has been completed and the handing over completed. As soon as the vehicle leaves from here, it goes straight to San Victor.”

“I think it is important for people to know that contraband is not a victimless crime. It hurts businesses, it hurts communities. Again too I know people have played off in the media and said certain things, the excuses are that it is a part and way of life, but it sincerely hurts local businesses and local communities. So this is our way of supporting, on behave of the nine companies, our way of supporting the police department in their efforts to fight contraband.”
