15 New Cases of COVID-19; an Additional 14 Confirmed Today

The news tonight is that number of corona virus cases continues to climb setting new records.  As many as fifteen new cases of the coronavirus have been confirmed setting a new record number of persons affected by the virus. Over the weekend, the number spiked to fifty-seven, and now there are also fourteen other possible cases from Ambergris Caye alone, pending further confirmation. This confirmation is expected later tonight.  Given the critical circumstances, the Prime Minister today called a press conference with a full cast. He was joined by the Ministers Patrick Faber, Pablo Marin as well as Doctor Marvin Manzanero. As well as the update on the current situation which puts the country in a coronavirus crisis, two other matters of national importance involving reopening of the schools and airport came out of the press conference. First, for an update on the cases:

“We had one case from San Pedro, seven cases from Corozal and seven cases from Orange Walk. The easy ones first. From Corozal, five out of the seven were from repatriated persons; three of those had been from people seeking medical care outside of Belize and two were coming in through the routine repatriation process. The other two in Corozal are tied to the initial identified case we had seen on Saturday; so that makes a little cluster of three persons up to now because as you go about identifying cases, you have to extend your contact tracing. So now contact tracing started yesterday for the other two persons, contacts of that first case identified on Friday.  The case from San Pedro is not linked to the ongoing investigation of the known case on Sunday. This is a separate person, who was symptomatic; who is family member of what we feel is going to be an index case. We can say that it is related to a church gather where we had gotten through rumour surveillance, potential suspect cases as a cluster. So this person was swabbed before and that’s why that sample was processed yesterday. That investigation process started yesterday as well so we anticipate that more cases can come from this independent, if you will, San Pedro case. That’s eight out of the fifteen cases yesterday. The other seven cases from Orange Walk; three are close contacts to the initial case on Saturday that we had not established any linkages outside of Belize. That has since changed because now we do know that the person has indicated that there is some contraband goods that can be part of the problem. Three persons out of the seven from Orange Walk yesterday are linked to that case on Saturday. We have four other cases from Orange Walk that are not linked to any other case. And I say Orange Walk, because that’s where they were swabbed, but one person is from Calcutta, one person is from Shipyard, one person is from Guinea Grass and one person is from Orange Walk, but works in San Pedro.”

Late this evening, the Office of the Director of Health Services issued an updated COVID-19 infographic that confirms fourteen additional cases, the second highest number of cases in one day. More on this in Thursday’s newscast.
