Schools Will Not Reopen on August 10th

Patrick Faber

One of the big announcements is regards in the opening of schools. Now parents and teachers have been expressing concern over the health of their children and those of the teachers if the virus is to spread. The preparedness of schools to cope with the guidelines of social distancing and the use of face masks has come under question. Early this morning the Belize National Teachers Union issued a release encouraging that students stay away. Given the climb in numbers, the decision has been taken not to reopen as planned for August fifteenth. But there is no date as to when students will go back to classrooms.

Patrick Faber, Minister of Education

“The safety of our children is our top priority and while getting children back into our classroom is very important, we will not do so at the detriment of students and teachers well-being. It is in that context that I now announce that in light of the spike in cases and an overall uneasiness on the part of parents and teachers and indeed the students themselves that the Ministry of Education will adjust its plan for the national reopening of schools for August tenth 2020 until further notice. So in short, we will not be reopening schools nationally and we will announce at a later date when it is we plan to reopen schools.”
