PM Retracts Statement About Private Flight

Dean Barrow

We will come to the latest on the P.G.I.A., but during the course of his lengthy presentation today, the Prime Minister misspoke, saying that a flight from Texas had arrived with potential investors for a hotel in San Pedro.  While he called no name, the Prime Minister said enough to identify the parties involved.  Well, information to News Five is that the said flight which the PM referred to did not land in Belize. In fact, a check with the Civil Aviation would have shown that the private flight never came.  When pressed about the matter and who approved it, the PM would retract the statement and then apologize in this way.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“At the National Oversight Committee and at Cabinet we had decided that a flights of that nature could be allowed in on conditions that the people who were going to be on the flight were going to bring negative PCR tests on conditions that they would go straight to the place at which they were saying, that they were not remain in country for more than a day or two. I mentioned the flight not to suggest that anything illegal or untoward happened. I’ve been sent material that purports to be pertaining to the landing of the flight and the departure of the flight. But I am not going to, if indeed the source that provided me with that is mistaken I am not going to quarrel. I’ll apologize if I misspoke. I simply did not have time. This just came to me when I got here to be able to check with Civil Aviation, to be able to check with the others that would have to be involved in giving permission for that flight to land and so I was going and I was careful to say that I didn’t engage in but I though the people who provided me with the actual material were extremely reliable. If I was mistaken again, freely apologize.”
