Cracking Down on Public Officials Facilitation Illegal Activities Along te Border

Dean Barrow

During his press conference today, Prime Minister Dean Barrow scolded Belizeans saying that their behaviour is a direct consequence of the rise in cases. Barrow told the nation that the government had failed in terms of public officials facilitating border crossings and assisting in the brisk contraband trade.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“You can’t have these complete uninhibited public events, you can’t do things that actually encourage licentious behaviour and not expect that we will pay a price. So I don’t want to be a scold, but I got to signal this afternoon that there will have to be a change.  I concede that as a government—when I talk about government, I am talking about government in the larger sense—there has been a failure on our part. I don’t want to be pointing fingers, but in terms of that enforcement, not only is it that our officials are not succeeding; perhaps that is in any event a tall order because our people are intent on breaking the laws, our people are intent on going across to Mexico and Guatemala by way of these illegal crossings. But when we hear, as we continue to do, the horror stories about officials of the government enabling people to break the law, facilitating the contrabandistas, taking money to escort them, that is the kind of thing that has got to stop. The new measures that they are going to take including sting operations, including tightened surveillance to try to catch not just the border jumpers, the public officials of this country that are clearly very much in league with the border jumpers, that are clearly very much complicit in the king of illegal activity that by and large has resulted in this new and deeper crisis that we are now experiencing.”
