Commissioner Williams Advises Police Officer Not to Travel to Northern Districts

A memo has been sent to members of the Belize Police Department advising officers that they are not to travel to San Pedro, Ambergris Caye. The directive came into effect on Tuesday and says that if any officer assigned to the island is on the day off or leave and is away, the officer will be allowed to return to work. According to Commissioner of Police Chester Williams this measure will remain in place for the next fourteen days as a precautionary measure. Williams says that officers are also advised not to travel to the northern districts.

“As a police department we have to be a couple steps ahead. We are the ones tasked with the responsibility of enforcing the laws and if it is we don’t put a mechanism in place to protect our officers from contracting the virus and if we have a police department that is so infected then who is going to enforce the law? We don’t want to end up like Bahamas where we see a number of officers are infected and quarantined and then the military has to be called in to be the police. We are doing what we can to ensure that we do not spread the virus among ourselves. You would know that policing is a family. When a police officer comes from San Pedro to the mainland, he or she interacts with a number of other police officers. So if that one becomes infected, the possibility of infecting many on the mainland will be extremely and then once he infects one mainland that one get infected with other then the department will be contaminated.  I also sent out an advisory advising that while we have not put any travel ban to the north that police officers are advice not to visit the north unless there is an extreme need to do so and if they do then we asked that they stay home or do not go and mingle and interact at the homes of other persons. I have to be careful as to how I craft that one because many of the offices who work in Belize City live in the north so they have to come home but what we are saying to you is that when you come home just stay within your home and mingle with your family and don’t go out and mingle outside. Because if you go out and mingle outside you might contract the virus, bring it to your family and the take it at work with the other police officers.”
