Female Police Officer Tests Positive for COVID-19 in Corozal

There are three positive cases reported in the Corozal District; two persons arrived via the northern border entry point as part of the repatriation process and are in hotel quarantine. They are also asymptomatic. The third person is a female officer attached to the Corozal Police Station. She is one of two persons in the north that is currently hospitalized for the virus, but according to ComPol Chester Williams, the officer is recovering. This is an interesting case, however, because the officer claims to have had no specific contact with any infected person. Williams confirmed today that several other officers have since been placed on quarantine.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“An officer in the Corozal area was tested positive over the weekend for COVID-19; it is a female officer and the Ministry of Health is in the process of doing contact tracing as well as yesterday we did the sanitation of the Corozal Police Station. A number of officers who came into close contact with the infected officer have also done their swabbing and we are hoping that either today or tomorrow we will be getting the results from those swabbing. As a police department, yes it is a cause for concern for us; we would hope that none of our officers would contract the virus, but we understand that we are living in a country where we are still seeing irresponsible people, border jumpers, coming into the country and the police has to interact with them and so it comes with being a police officer. The good thing is that the officer is on her way to recovery; her prognosis is good at time. We believe that in the next few days, she should be out of the hospital and we will see how we go from there.”
