U.D.P. Ministers Defend S.O.E. Extension

Michael Finnegan

According to members of the ruling United Democratic Party, Belize is not the only country in the region that has used legislation to curb crime.  Jamaica and other Caribbean countries have imposed state of emergencies on certain communities in order to deal with major crimes.  The government says that the extended S.O.E. will produce the desired result.

Michael Finnegan, Area Representatives, Mesopotamia

“First of all what is happening in the country of Belize is not isolated. It is happening in the St Kitts as I speak, in Trinidad and Tobago in Jamaica and in almost or all Caribbean countries. This phenomenon is happening. All governments in the Caribbean have tried everything in order to alleviate this problem and this problem is so huge, so gigantic is has taken all of us a time to get to the bottom of it but will assure the Belizean people that we of the Caribbean are resilient people and it doesn’t matter how long it takes Madam Speaker we in this region, our region will alleviate.”

“I also join with the comments from Freetown because what my friend from Freetown was saying is that while we do this we must remember that there are fundamental rights in the constitution of Belize and that those citizens even though we try to protect the rights of the citizenry they certainly deserve the protection of those rights and so I join with him as well. But the member from Mesopotamia spoke about this being a phenomenon not only occurring in Belize City but occurring all over the world.”

“It works, the empirical evidence is there. In a situation where the Southside is in extremist in murders, in gang murders in particular so far that is concern then there is time to do what we are doing today. In fact we are positive that it will produce the desired result and it will absolutely stamp down in particularly the murders.”
