Who Ordered the G.S.U. to be Deployed?

While both sides are looking for answers, someone did give the order for the GSU to be deployed to the area and an infuriated Chester Williams is trying to get to the bottom of it. According to Williams, the GSU was pulled back after he received words that the officers had descended on the protestors. As for protestors who were shot by GSU, Williams is asking them to make a formal report to the Professional Standards Branch so that swift actions can be taken against the officers. Williams says that some members of the GSU have already been transferred following today’s incident.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“I called the O.C. in Eastern Davison and I directed that the GSU be removed immediately. Mister Dawson assured me that he was going on the grounds to ensure that the GSU were removed but by that time the damage were already done because persons were already shot with rubber bullets and people had become more agitated. Now I want the public to understand that as a police department we must always thrive to be professional. We must always thrive to do to things in a peaceful manner. Brute force and ignorance does not make a situation better for us. I believe that if the ordinary uniform police officers had been left in the area with those who were protesting the crowd would not have become agitated. But Mister Dawson has given his explanation as to what transpired. I am looking at it and I have also asked the union to have those persons who were shot come in to make their complaints and we are going to address it swiftly. Certain elements from the GSU, have been transferred because we need to send a strong signal that we are not going to have our officers go out and use force that is unnecessary against being who are dissenting people. I tried as best as I could have to communicate with the commander on the ground to have made sure that this did not reach the stage it did. So I am really and truly upset and I am disappointed because at the end f the day the union can also see it as me setting them up because I had said to them what the position was and just minutes after I told them, I spoke to them here comes a total different method than what I had told them would have been our rules of engagement. It cannot work.”

“ComPol Williams was it a matter of lack of communication, miscommunication or just someone going over your head, going straight against what you had ordered?”

Chester Williams

“Well I am still trying to find that out and I have met with the senior command of Eastern Division and I hope that it is not a situation where someone decided to go above me and do as they so please. They had given some explanation. I am not too happy with it and at the end of the day, something needs to be done and it has to be done quickly. When an instruction is given so long as that instruction is a lawful one it is expected that those below must follow the instructions.”
