B.N.T.U. Prez Says GSU Action Was Uncalled For

Elena Smith

Back to the violence at the port, National President of the Belize National Teachers Union, Senator Elena Smith commented on the tense situation at the Port of Belize. She says that the actions taken by the state, specifically the GSU was uncalled for.

Senator Elena Smith, National President, B.N.T.U.

“I think uncalled for. What happened today was not necessary. These persons were out here, they were all being very peaceful and I don’t understand why we ended up at this point. And these officers were behaving as if though they were being attacked and some of them were the ones that were throwing things around. They were throwing things, but then they attacked the people who were here. And they were just attacking anybody who was in the way. They just attacked; they didn’t care who it was—whether you were doing or not. As a matter of fact, one of them came to me and I made him know clearly don’t speak to me that way and you have some respect when you are talking to me. You noh come to me like that. We have every right to fight for what we deserve and there is no reason why they should have behaved the way they did today; absolutely none at all.”
