Y.M.C.A. Goes Online!

Clara Cuellar

The Young Men’s Christian Association is moving its classes online to meet the changing times to serve its population. The center can accommodate fifteen students but has the capacity to accommodate more with the necessary equipment. The Y.M.C.A. has put its courses online via moodle, which is an open-source learning management system. Today, we stopped by the YMCA to find out more about what they are doing and how you can help.

Clara Cuellar, Executive Director, Y.M.C.A.

“With a close down those who are further behind or have left opportunity become exponentially further behind. We already had a computer programme and we had benches which were less than six feet apart, so even as we opened up in May some of our high school students had to come and beg if they can come because they were falling behind in school. So, what happens in our communities and several pockets of community is that students don’t have device and they may have one device in the home, however, there are five children and they don’t have enough bandwidth so if the teacher have them in a Google classroom setting you will find so much buffering occurring at home that the class is over and they are not even half way through the lesson. So, we started seeking friends of the Y and then a larger population of how we can do this. So, what you see here is a celebration of many hands.   Prior to this, the Y.M.C.A. went in the evening four to six because schools were letting out at three; now we believe we can do a nine to eleven thirty- twelve and a one-one thirty to about three-thirty four, but we have to strengthened the infrastructure. So, anyone out there with gently used computers at home or has headphones at home because we are using a platform called moodle. We have courses set up online and parents and teachers don’t have to worry that their children are wandering online. In a learning platform system we have lesson plans; student notes; quizzes, in class work sheets and tests that are graded right away.”
