Faber and Saldivar Meet Amid U.D.P. Resignations

U.D.P. leader elect, Patrick Faber met this morning with former political opponent John Saldivar, their first sit-down after the leadership convention on Sunday.  At the time that the official results had come in, the Belmopan area representative and former Minister of National Security was a no-show, leaving many to believe that Saldivar was not as magnanimous in defeat as Faber was when he was trounced at the previous convention on February ninth.  This morning’s meeting was part of Faber’s rounds in an effort to bring the party together ahead of the November general elections.  The meetings, however, come at a time when at least two area representatives have indicated that they will not seek re-election and several others are contemplating their departure.  U.D.P. Chairman, Michael Peyrefitte was absent from that meeting, but says he expects to be fully briefed of what was discussed pertaining to the way forward within the party.

“Sedi Elrington has indicated that he’s not running again.  Gaspar Vega has indicated that he’s not running again, but that’s not everybody, there’re still twenty-nine people left and if it stays that way then I am sure we will find some other suitable candidates.  Those two will be missed, I can tell you that and there will be big shoes to fill in terms of delivering a political seat, no doubt, but they’re not everybody.  We’re a mass party we’re full of talent and we have people who are willing and able to step in and represent very well for the U.D.P. in November in the general elections.”

“We understand that Mr. Saldivar and Mr. Faber met today and have decided to present a united front in time for the elections.”

“Well I know that they were supposed to meet today but I’m not privy to the results of that meeting.  I was in the senate all day, but I’m sure one or both of them will let me know what happened in that meeting.  But if it comes out that they will present a unified front [then] that’s what we do, we’re the U.D.P.  We have no issue with that and that would not surprise me at all.  That is what is expected to happen.”

“So how would you perhaps describe the happenings immediately after the convention was over, you know, it seemed that there was some tensions there.  How do you describe that, what do you make of that?”

Michael Peyrefitte

“That’s politics my brother.  Dis da noh jacks and ball, dis da politics.  This is a big person’s game.  Dis da fu woman and man, dis da noh fu gyal and bwai, you understand me.  So you’re in a rough and tumble game and so when you put your all out there and the people who are not victorious actually will be hurt and rejected and those who win are elated.  It’s the ultimate zero sum game.”
