COVID-19 Shows up in San Felipe, Blue Creek and Santa Elena

Residents of San Felipe and Blue Creek Villages in Orange Walk District, whom health officials believe may have been in physical contact with persons who recently tested positive for the virus, will be swabbed within the next few days, as a contact tracing exercise continues in those communities.  Today, Director of Health Services, Doctor Marvin Manzanero provided additional updates on the status of a family of seven from Blue Creek that are under quarantine in Orange Walk Town after tests results came back positive.

“I would say the last nine cases have been of relative interest, I think, to just about everybody so I will go to the first cluster of cases that we reported from the Blue Creek area and that was last week.  So we had seven cases from one single family.  In Blue Creek, as I had said, initially we reported of three cases, those were three minors and without getting into particulars, I will give you information as to how that came about because of videos and misinformation that’s circulating on social media as well.  So three minors were picked up and because they were alone at home when they were picked up, intervention was done through the Ministry of Human Development and eventually another family member, adult, accompanied the children to the quarantine center in Orange Walk.  So they were swabbed before and that’s why we made a diagnosis of three initial cases.  We eventually a diagnosis of four more which were the parents and two adults of the same family.  So it’s five, two adults but five are sons, daughters of this adult couple, two minors but three of their children are adults.  Those persons came in to the Blue Creek police station after the minors had been picked up and they were taken to be swabbed and placed at the quarantine center.  So that’s the diagnosis we made on Friday.  We had an initial cluster of seven cases.”
