ComPol Says He Had No Hand in Scenes of Crime Relocation

The Scenes of Crime Unit has relocated from the Queen Street Police Station to a rental office space of Barrow and Williams, the Prime Minister’s law firm building on Albert Street.  Last week, Minister of National Security Michael Peyrefitte confirmed the move, saying he had viewed the space.  Today, the press asked Commissioner of Police about the relocation, but he said he had absolutely no hand in it.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“They are currently housed at the building as you mentioned. They left this building about two weeks now.”

Reporter

“What prompted that move commissioner, was it more office space?”

“Yes, the space that was being utilized here was too small. It couldn’t have accommodated the different services that they needed to provide. So, they had to seek a more spacious location and so based on their search, where they are currently was the best location that they could have found that would have been able to meet their budgetary constraints.”

Reporter

“This may be looked at as a move that is nepotistic, knowing that that is the PM and his business partner law firm and they are basically awarding a contract to them to pay some six thousand dollars a month to have that particular unit house there. Do you have any comment on that?”

Chester Williams

“How am I going to comment on that? I am not the head of scenes of crime. I am not the government of Belize that decides where to rent. I really and truly have no comment for that.”

Reporter

“And you had no influence in whatsoever as to the location or relocation of that particular unit any at all?”

Chester Williams

“The scene of crime unit is a separate department from the police department. I have no control over the scenes-of-crime unit.”

The Scenes of Crime Unit falls under the National Forensic Science Service, which is led by Director Gian Cho.
