N.H.I.’s Facing Financial Problems; Support Services Caps Exhausted for July

There is bad news tonight for persons who rely on the National Health Insurance Programme. A notice was issued today and it says that all referrals have been exhausted for the month of July, and that clients will now be required to pay for these services in full. The N.H.I.’s annual budget was cut and while N.H.I. clinics did not close, the programme had to institute immediate measures to keep the clinics operating. This includes a decrease in the monthly budget allocations or caps that the N.H.I. Clinics which limits support services. These services include pharmacy, laboratory and imaging.  The notice also reads that as a result of these reductions, the public is advised that the NHI clinics will need to give priority to the most vulnerable groups to include the elderly, persons with chronic conditions and the maternal child health population.   The People’s United Party has weighed on the matter and says that, “This government obviously has no concept of the hardships being faced by ‘normal’ Belizeans or, they couldn’t care less. The cuts announced so far have all targeted Belizeans who can least afford it – cuts in the health sector, cuts in the public service, cuts in the education sector and now the announcement of cuts to N.H.I.”
