2 New COVID-19 Cases!

There are two new COVID-19 cases to report tonight. The first of these two cases is a repatriated Belizean. The patient is a male who arrived on a repatriation flight on Friday, July tenth. He is under quarantine and is asymptomatic. The second patient is a man in his fifties who was a patient at the San Ignacio Community Hospital over the weekend which is worrisome to health authorities.  Director of Health Services, Doctor Marvin Manzanero tells us more about this second patient.

“The other case that we identified today is one of significant interest to the entire team because it is in a male that went to the San Ignacio Community Hospital because he was having, as we have noted in our social media post, gastrointestinal symptom and loss of sense of taste and smell. He didn’t require to be inside a hospital so he was managed and discharged to go home. He was swabbed and the sample was taken for a study that we are also doing the AFI study – Acute Febrile Illness study. So, his sample was processed today and it turned out to be reactive.  I think in this particular instance we really have to commend the teams that remain on the ground; the teams that remain in the hospital setting for thinking outside of the box because we are still in an enhanced surveillance mode and that is the reason why they were able to pick-up this person. He doesn’t have the classic signs and symptoms, if you will, of COVID-19.”

“Any reason to suspect that the man in Cayo may have exposed other persons?”

“The contact tracing will show us what exactly happened because the preliminary note that we have is that he doesn’t have a travel history and he doesn’t have any illegal crossing over the border.”

A statement issued via the Office of Director of Health Services Facebook page a short while ago says that eighty-eight samples were processed today. Among those are samples from contact tracing and mapping exercise linked to the last seven cases detected in the north. All those samples were negative but the mapping continues. The statement notes that a previous patient has recovered and that puts the number of active cases at sixteen.
