Man Kills Brother over Cell Phone in Cow Pen!

Antonio Pop

Tonight, there is a tragic case of fratricide to report down south. It’s not often we report on such crimes – where a sibling kills another – and when you hear why, it makes for an even sadder case.  The brothers were reportedly drinking and had an argument over a cellular phone and that is when one of them took out a knife and stabbed the other directly in the chest.  It’s a tragic murder that the common-law wife of the deceased is still trying to process after she witnessed the murder. Here’s the story.

Andrea Polanco, Reporting

Eighteen-year-old Antonio Pop was stabbed to death by his brother twenty-year-old Christopher Pop. The killing happened around seven-thirty on Saturday night in Cow Pen Village in a neighborhood called ‘Area Azteca’. Rosalinda Caal, the girlfriend of Antonio Pop, says that she and her boyfriend lived in Bella Vista Village. This weekend they were visiting her family in Cow Pen and were at her father’s house when the incident happened. She says that the tragic killing was triggered a cell-phone related issue.

“My brother-in-law asked my bwai to charge his phone and I don’t know where my bwai put the phone. After that my brother-in-law came inside and asked my bwai where the phone deh. My bwai said that he nuh remember where he put the phone and that is when they start to fight. I told my bwai, see the phone right there and my bwai give him the phone and my bwai drop the phone and my brother-in-law got vex and that is when they start to fight.”

The two brothers had a heated argument which led to a physical fight. And that is when Christopher Pop pulled out a knife and stabbed his brother Antonio Pop in the chest. Rosalinda Caal says that she tried to stop the fight but wasn’t able to do so. She describes witnessing the fatal stab that claimed her boyfriend’s life.

“I saw my brother-in-law punched my bwai. Then when I saw they start to fight, I took away the machete from my bwai and I didn’t know my brother-in-law had a little knife. Afterwards, I saw my brother-in-law punched me and then they started to fight and come out side. My brother-in-law had a machete in his hand and then I saw my brother-in-law stabbed my bwai in his heart with a knife. Lots of blood came out and my bwai gone like he the sleep and he didn’t get up back. Nobody was at home. Only me and he and my brother-in-law were at home when the fight start.”

Caal says she was unable to call for help immediately because she didn’t have a cell phone. She also alleges that Christopher Pop was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the killing. She says that he ran away from the scene acknowledging what he had done.

“I see that when my brother-in-law stabbed my bwai he said that he gwein because he nuh want police ketch him right here. I don’t want police to catch me and I kill my own brother. That is what he said when he left.”

Chairman of Cow Pen Victor Juarez was called out to the scene around nine in the night. When he arrived police officers were already there. He says that the area where the killing happened is isolated and also doesn’t have street lights.

“Maybe a maximum of ten people were in the area because it is a quiet , secluded area; very limited or no electricity was in the area so the area was very dark and I guess that is one of the reasons not many people were in the area.  I was there and as the village leader, I would just want to keep insisting on the idea of bringing public lighting into the area because that maybe would have allowed more people to see what was happening or to see the direction in which the person fled. Public lighting would be very beneficial in the area because there is zero at this time. Sometimes the visibility and light might be a deterrent factor because criminals and people who want to engage in an activity would think twice.”

On Sunday, police arrested and charged Christopher Pop with the murder of his brother Antonio Pop. Reporting for News Five, I’m Andrea Polanco.
