Everything Elsy – a Delicious Assortment of Fresh Fruit Arrangements

In the following story you will meet an enterprising single mother of four children. She is Elsy Rosales and she started a small business from scratch. She did not have a lot of money in the bank nor experience in business, and was left homeless at a point, but she kept going and today,  Everything Elsy, is the right place for fruit arrangements; all made in her kitchen. News Five’s Duane Moody caught up with Elsy Rosales.

A single mother of four is fighting the good fight and doing what she can to be her own boss. Back in 2019, Elsy Rosales started a small business, offering a delicious assortment of fresh fruit arrangements and chocolate dipped fruits for every occasion. Named “Everything Elsy,” it focuses on healthy living, but it is also a creative and unique way to display fruit or vegetable as a gift – rather than the traditional bouquet of flowers.

“Everything Elsy caters to your healthy needs in a beautiful fruit decal. So Everything Elsy is a business that supplies you with beautiful arrangements made from my kitchen, which is basket arrangements, chocolates and I just started fruit platters too for parties. So everything Elsy caters for healthy needs in a beautiful decal.”

Just before the Easter break in 2019, Rosales’ house was destroyed by fire and she and her family were displaced. They lived with her mother for a while, but then she lost her employment. “Everything Elsy” was created after a ‘Do It Yourself’ gesture for a supportive friend, went viral online.  Since then, she has been getting many requests.

“I didn’t have any income, I was homeless; I had my children and I really needed to do something because money was going and nothing was coming in. So I decided to make a fruit basket for a friend of mine because times were very bad and this person was very supportive to me. I Googled how to make the basket because I couldn’t afford to buy one at the time. I made it, gave it to the person and it became a hit. I was shocked because it was just a basket, I tried it my first time. And then I slowly started making orders for people one here, one there. Build your immune system and you need fruits from Everything Elsy so I started to do strawberries, fruit cups, I started to take little orders and if people couldn’t afford it, I would even drop it for them secretly not knowing that I took off a little five dollars for them. I have my delivery man that delivers if you can’t pick up and he is very reliable.”

But COVID-19 happened and Rosales was not able to get all the fruits she needed for her arrangements. But she persevered and participated in the Belize City Council’s Accelerator Programme. Aside from getting a refrigerator for her business, ‘Everything Elsy’ is now a legitimately registered business.

“I went to the training and it just took off. It taught you so much, especially for the other people who don’t know how to cost and price because it is very important in a business. If you are not making it, it really doesn’t make sense. It teaches you who you are targeting? Can they afford it?”

“We need to ensure that the individuals are able to carry out some level of training. In general terms of business models, marketing their products, the basic profit and loss statement. It does not have to be anything technical, just a book and a pen, but we really wanted to just round them off so that when we put them out there in the position to really create their own business and move their business forward that they do not fail. We also ensured that we provided the necessary equipment to jumpstart that business.”

Rosales is ready to take her business to the next level.

“Where I see myself in the future? I see myself maybe on Albert Street with a nice little store or somewhere by the North Plaza, but I definitely see big and better things for Everything Elsy.”
