Lisa Shoman to be Appointed Judge of the Supreme Court

Lisa Shoman

While on the matter of judges, there is word tonight that Prime Minister Dean Barrow will be proceeding to have Senior Counsel Lisa Shoman appointed to the post of judge of the Supreme Court. The Judicial and Legal Services Commission Council and the Leader of the Opposition, we are told, were consulted, as is required for such appointments.  The contractual appointment is only for a one-year period.  Shoman has been practicing law for over thirty years, having studied at the University of West Indies.  In early July, she was elected president of the Inter-American Development Bank Administrative Tribunal based in Washington. Leading up to the national referendum in 2019, Shoman was a proponent in taking the territorial claim to the International Court of Justice. News Five has also learned that Westmin James, a Trinidadian Lecturer at U.W.I., is also to be appointed as a judge for one year. Both Shoman and James represented the government before former CJ Benjamin who, it is recalled, issued an injunction restraining the holding of the referendum.  Shoman has been engaged for many years in advocacy on human rights issues. She is a former Senator and Minister of Foreign Affairs.
