Police Presence on Convention Day

Chester Williams

From an operational perspective, the Belize Police Department will be deployed to the ITVET to maintain law and order on the day of the convention, however, officers will not be present in large numbers, as voting will be done systematically by district and supporters will not be allowed to congregate.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“I think that what we have agreed upon with the organizers and the AG is one of them is that it is going to be different this time, in the sense that it’s not going to be an event where all the delegates and other supporters are going to come and congregate in one area.  How it’s going to be done is that they’re going to vote by districts.  So Punta Gorda is going to vote first and then they leave, then Dangriga comes in, votes then leaves.  So you’ll find that at any given time there will not be a mass crowd at the convention area, so that will give us better control and so you’re not going to see one hundred and twenty-five police officers this time.  Our deployment is going to be much smaller, but we must also ensure that we have patrol around the perimeters of the convention grounds with a view to ensure that law and order is maintained during the time of the convention.”

And stay with us because we will have live coverage of the convention on Sunday.
