Innocent Citizens Need not Worry About Dragnet

Michael Peyrefitte

Concerns from residents from the neighbourhoods that were swept by police this morning are centered around innocent citizens being corralled into the roundup.  While several persons complained loudly about damage to property in the wake of the predawn raid, others voiced fear that they would be arrested and trooped to the Belize Central Prison for a second time, despite not having anything to do with the recent spike in violent crimes.

Michael Peyrefitte, Minister of National Security

“I can assure you that nobody is being dragged into it.  If the police are paying you attention it‘s because the intelligence is saying that you are involved in some way and we want to make sure that you know, if you are involved in criminal activity, that the police are paying attention to you.  So yes, if you know you are not involved in anything and you‘re not involved in anything you don‘t have to worry about the police.  But if you are associated with criminal activity then you need to be really worried.”
