M.O.H. Calls on Public to Adhere to Healthy and Safety Measures

Marvin Manzanero

Last week, Belize confirmed six new cases of COVID-19. The most recent patients were two Belizeans who entered the country illegally, but were placed under quarantine upon their entry.  They were confirmed positive upon the second test administered, so for now the couple remains under quarantine. Last week Thursday, a woman and her two children were discovered to have entered the country illegally.  This was only discovered after they had settled in at her grandmother’s home in San Lorenzo Village in Orange Walk, but by that time authorities say the mother had already left the country. The grandmother and her two grand children were swabbed and placed in quarantine.  When we spoke with Doctor Marvin Manzanero on Monday, we asked him for an update on those results, but they were still pending. Manzanero took the opportunity to highlight the need for more responsible actions in light of the pandemic. The Ministry of Health has been highlighting the risk these border jumpers present with the hopes that the public will follow all measures in place.

“We are following that up. They were swabbed. I don’t know where the results are. We did run thirty-eight more samples today and that is an extra run simply because of the two flights that came in Friday. All the samples that were processed today are negative. But I don’t know if the samples that you are referring to from those of Orange Walk were processed today.”

“Any advice for the public?”

Dr. Marvin Manzanero

“We did see a lot of movement as well from reports that we are getting from across the country, from the health sector. I think that is a part of the concern. It would seem that the message that the part of the message we are trying to get people to latch on to in terms of physical distancing, wearing of masks properly, avoiding bigger groups if you don’t have to – I don’t know that those messages went anywhere. We are discussing internally how we go about trying to engage people to change their behavior; how you go about re-starting an educational process. It would seem that the messages we had in February –March – not much happened. I mean when you see the overall reaction that people are having – I am not saying that for the vast part people have heeded the messages we have sent – but when you see the behaviour that we saw this weekend, then you will realize that there is still work that needs to happen.”
