Off Duty Cops are Off Duty at Non-Compliance Establishments

The Commissioner of Police has complained about patrons of bars and nightclubs who are not complying with the measures in place to battle the pandemic. Chester Williams also says that police officers will no longer provide security service for these establishments as a result of the risks they pose. But what about off duty cops – will night-life businesses be able to hire them for security duties? That’s not going to happen, according to Williams. He says off-duty cops are off such duties going forward. Here’s how he explained it on Monday.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“Club owners, though the law doesn’t put a responsibility on them to ensure that the patrons wear mask they should still make it their responsibility to ensure that they tell every patron that come that they wear a mask.”

“You have some officers who would be off duty – we know the practice is would be off duty and still get hired at these nightclubs to still be there to do security jobs, what do you say to that?”

“Well, if I have given an instruction that officers are not going to work there, whether they are off duty or not they are not going to work there. If they are found there working, then that is a disciplinary charge that they are going to get. We must understand that separate and apart from the requirement of masks, there is still a requirement for social distancing and the law does make provision that in these establishments tables are to be certain distance apart so that groups are separated. When you go to a nightclub and the club is so packed, there is no degree of social distancing and if one person in there is infected, that person does have the potential to infect many others.”
