Latest COVID Patients Confirm Positive on Second Test!

On Friday, Belize recorded two more cases of COVID-19.  This brings the total number of cases to thirty, nine of which are active. Today, thirty-eight more samples were processed, but they were all negative. When we spoke to Doctor Marvin Manzanero this afternoon, he confirmed that two new patients are Belizeans who entered the country illegally from Mexico by way of La Union. The patients, he notes, have been in quarantine ever since, but didn’t test positive the first time. They are asymptomatic and will not be released since they now have a positive test.

Dr. Marvin Manzanero, Director of Health Services

“The two that we detected on Friday was a couple that had been caught entering the country illegally through La Union. The interesting story here is that the couple had already been screened upon entry and they were negative for SARS COVID 2. So, this was their second test and that is when they turned out positive. I believe this underscores the value of being able to screen people before they are released from the quarantine area. So, that is how we were able to manage to identify two new cases.”

“So, they were under quarantine the entire time since coming into the country?”

“Yeah and they were being screened when they were about to released, had these been negative they were to be released on Sunday, yesterday.”

“…and so there were no instances where they may have had any sort of contact with any member of the public or any persons dealing with them there are the facility.”

Dr. Marvin Manzanero

“No. They are members of a family and other family members are negative but nonetheless other family members will have to be screened again just like we are going to go back and screen them until we have determined they are negative. It’s the same process that would apply to the immediate family members that they were with. We are processing samples tomorrow and Friday. The repatriation process continues. Wed had more people arriving through the northern border entry point today and we anticipate people are going to be coming on the flight on Friday. It seems that this next flight have people who are ill and need to be home quarantined. So, it becomes a little bit of extra work for us because of monitoring areas. Ministry of Health is already stretched thin when you have to be looking out for people in hotels in quarantine areas and home quarantine it is not an easy process. So, we do ask for the community to remain engaged and work with us if we are to still continue to create a successful story in our COVID-19 as we have had so far.”
