Cops to Step Up Crime Fighting!

Alden Dawson

In the past few weeks we’ve been reporting on a number of robberies and just this weekend two Belize City men were killed.  Police say that gang rivalry is at the heart of these killings and that these gangs are also committing other acts of crime especially since the State of Emergency was lifted. Now, police say that they are stepping up their efforts where crime fighting is concerned. Today Commander of Eastern Division ACP outlines some of the measures being taken to curb the gang rivalry and other crimes.

ACP Alden Dawson, Regional Commander, Eastern Division

“Since the announcement of the lifting of the SOE on July first, we were expecting some increase in activity across the city. Since then we had put in place several measures to deal with these criminal elements and prevent them from moving easily within the division. We have had several operations over the weekend, but unfortunately we still had two murders. We have since stepped up our efforts and you will see an increase in police activity this week and into the week, with the same aim to curb these situations. I ask the public to bear patience and cooperate with the police. We will be putting on additional pressure where loitering and public drinking are concerned to keep the streets clear of these criminals and their activities.  We have directed the police to go back to these stop and search – to increase it. I know that some of them still had the fear of this COVID situation and we are trying to our best to get that out of their mind and we will increase back the stop and search which use to assist us a lot.   We are stepping up our effort in all our areas foot patrol; mobile; motorcycle. We are starting to go back to where we were prior to the state of emergency because while that was assisting us we could have looked at other areas where to use the police. But we have now returned back to where we were before to prevent some of these crimes.    We know for a fact that the criminals are very much happy for the face masks because it assist them o conceal their identities as such. What we encourage and have been saying to business people to help identify criminals who may commit crimes against them is to have them remove shades and cap because they further disguise themselves; while the face mask we cannot do much because it is mandatory. We try to encourage them not to entertain people in their business or if somebody walks into you, you try to avoid that person if covered up because more than likely covered up that way to commit crime. We find that many of them use a cap and pull all the way down or a shades and it makes identity difficult.”
