B.M.D.A. Says K.H.M.H.A.’s Decision to Terminate Doctors is Unjustifiable

As part of its cost cutting measures, the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital has terminated professional contracts.  In May, the hospital ended its contract with Ophthalmologist, Doctor Amin Hegar.  Later in June, it did the same with Doctor Fernando Cuellar, who worked in the Adult Intensive Care Unit.  The firing comes in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic when all hands are needed on deck. Today, the Belize Medical and Dental Association says that it doesn’t understand or accept that medical doctors, key in providing vital care to poor Belizeans, are being let go.  The B.M.D.A. points out that the doctors trained to manage intensive care and critically ill patients, have been the first to be targeted.  The B.M.D.A. also notes that other options were not taken into consideration before “heartlessly removing key physicians needed to serve the people of Belize.” The K.H.M.H.A. says it will save about one hundred and two thousand dollars, but the B.M.D.A. says, “The small wages paid to these doctors is an unjustifiable reason to terminate a service that is of paramount importance in the management of illness during these trying times for all Belizeans.”
