C.W.U. Continues Protest Against P.B.L.

The staff at the Port of Belize Limited today continued their demonstration against their employer. The management at the Port has decided to cut staff salaries by ten percent due to the drop of income resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.  The staff, comprising members of the Christian Workers Union, are resisting the pay cut and demanding that they be provided financial records that can justify the cut in salaries. So far, the demonstration has been ineffective and management is not budging. Staff Representative Wayne Lambey says that they hope to have other unions join their fight.

Wayne Lambey, Staff Representative

“There isn’t even beep from PBL management towards the CWU or towards myself. He staff is really demoralized, depressed and annoyed. It is not normal that you see staff doing these actions here. I am happy when staff decided that for them to get what they just deserve for them to get some traction, for them to take some upsetting people. Sometimes it takes you going the other route rather than taking the normal route that other would take, hoping and praying. We are hoping that management would wake up?”

“But how do you wake up management?”

Wayne Lambey

“Well we are doing this.”

Hipolito Novelo

“But they are still sleeping.”

Wayne Lambey

“Well we hope that this will also trigger other managements which would be the labour, the other unions.”

One union that the C.W.U. hopes would have come to their aid is the umbrella Trade Union Congress of Belize which the C.W.U. is a member of.  C.W.U. President, Mose Hyde says that it is incredible that the N.T.U.C.B. has not even showed interest in the C.W.U.’s fight.
