Gasman Young Jr. Succumbs to Gunshot Injury

Gasman Young Jr.

A man well-known to the law died within hours after he was shot following a brazen robbery.  On Thursday, around three o’clock in the afternoon, the Belama Branch of Scotia Bank was hit by five robbers. Gasman Young Junior was shot to the neck when he attempted to flee, along with four others, in a waiting boat docked in the area of Seashore Drive. The group targeted the bank and robbed a customer inside, but the cops pursued and caught up to them. They recovered the loot of approximately thirty-three thousand dollars as well as the weapons used in the commission of the crime. The four other robbers are expected to be taken to court early next week. Here is News Five’s Duane Moody with a report.

Duane Moody, Reporting

Gasman Young Junior succumbed to a gunshot injury to the neck while receiving treatment at the K.H.M.H.; this was a few hours after he and four others carried out a heist at the Scotiabank Belama Branch. Police intercepted the men as they were attempting to escape from a Dodge Caravan onto a boat at the entrance of Seashore Drive. As the thieves boarded the small boat, there was an exchange of gunfire during which Young Junior was injured. Jason McKenzie was also hit to the arm. McKenzie has since been treated and released into police custody  jonign three other suspects.

Unfortunately, Mister Gasman Young who was receiving treatment passed away yesterday sometime after six p.m. His body now lies at the morgue awaiting a post-mortem examination.”

“Sir, do you know the condition of the second person?”

Supt. Alejandro Cowo

“He was discharged last night and is now in police custody.”

Leon Westby & Anthony Barrow

Three others were detained by police after they jumped overboard and into the water. They include: Leon Westby, Anthony Barrow and a seventeen-year-old minor. Superintendent Alejandro Cowo says that all are from Belize City and known to police.

“Are these persons all from Belize City?”

Supt. Alejandro Cowo

“Yes all of them are from Belize City.”

Duane Moody

“They are known criminal elements?”

Supt. Alejandro Cowo

“Yes they are known to the police.”

Official details issued today by the Belize Police Department reveal that one of the men entered the bank and held up the security officer who was standing at the entrance. After robbing the guard of a cell phone, the gunman then stole a bag from a customer who was making a deposit. That school bag was discovered inside the boat with twenty-thousand six hundred and twelve dollars and ninety-nine cents Belize currency and eleven thousand three hundred and seventy-eight dollars and seventy-five cents in cheques. Also found in the bag were two nine millimetre pistols.

Supt. Alejandro Cowo

“We already checked the cash that was recovered. And also in the same bag where the cash was, police found two mm pistols—one was loaded with eight rounds and the other was loaded with three rounds.”

Today, when we caught up with the mother of Young Junior, she was too distraught to give a comment, claiming that she was never informed that it was her son that was involved, let alone killed in the incident.

Supt. Alejandro Cowo

“We express our sentiments with the family. The loss of a life is concerning for anybody—it doesn’t matter if it is a criminal or a civilian. We as police officers have a duty and that is what we responded to and unfortunately, he lost his life yesterday during this robbery.”
