DHS Warns That Chloroquine Cannot Prevent COVID-19

Marvin Manzanero

The Ministry of Health is cautioning Belizeans about taking COVID-19 prevention treatment.  The Director of Health Services shared that there are reports of a pharmacy selling a medication known for the prevention and treatment of malaria. Doctor Manzanero warns that it isn’t an effective treatment for COVID-19 and should not be purchased without a doctor’s prescription.

Dr. Marvin Manzanero, Director of Health Services

“We have heard now clandestine reports of some pharmacy selling chloroquine which is the malaria pill. We know that people are reporting that they have started taking it to prevent as a prophylactic measure. It doesn’t work. You shouldn’t be using of those medications without a medical prescription because it has side effects and you can wind up being in the hospital and that will not necessarily prevent you from getting SARS COVID2. You may have heard after he dexametazone or almost at the same time the use of ivermectin which is an anti-parasite medication. Recent report that just came out earlier today is that there is now proven benefit of ivermectin so that it is being pulled off as potential treatment for patients. We did get notes that it is being used in neighboring Mexico as part of their treatment option but this morning we read that it doesn’t work as published in public health notes that we got.”
