Barrow to Briceño: “Se Acabo!”

Dean Barrow

The first phase of the Unemployment Relief Programme, as well as the pantry assistance programme, is being audited by the Auditor General and her team. Leader of the Opposition, John Briceño had called for the audit, but resigned from the COVID-19 National Oversight Committee on June tenth.  With millions upon millions of dollars being disbursed by the current government, the question is: who will call for accountability and transparency of these funds? This is what Barrow was asked on Tuesday and here is his response.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“Well, I right at the start extended this invitation to the Opposition and the Social Partners to join with the government in a collective enterprise that would see a national and nationalistic response to this unprecedented crisis. The Opposition saw fit to pull out, to disengage. Now their absence somehow can be used as a crotch to support any suggestion that there will be an element of accountability or monitory that is missing. First of all that is not really true but if it were, whose fault is that?  We didn’t drive them away. Throughout the process when they are a part of the joint enterprise they were treated with complete courtesy. In fact with complete equality. They had every say as a partner with the government and other in designing the programme and administering the programme. Now they have pulled out well, se acabo. That is it. They are gone. We are committed to continuing to do all what we are doing.”
