P.S.B. Investigates Balam Street Incident

Dwayne Sutherland

The Belize Police Department’s Professional Standards Branch says there is an internal investigation into a police officer following an incident on Balam Street this past weekend in Belize City. Cops claim an off-duty fellow police officer confronted them and tried to prevent them from making an arrest. On Thursday Officer Commanding the Professional Standards Branch Superintendent Dwyane Sutherland says the internal investigation may lead to disciplinary charges.

“There was also an incident that was shown on social media. I believe the video was shown on Facebook where there was an altercation on Balam Street Belize City with some officers and civilians. From that same incident, a police officer visited our office in Belize City and he made a complaint. His complaint is that on the twenty-seventh of June, 2020 he was doing an investigation on that street and they were searching a number of men. During the search, a female unknown to the officer presented herself and tried to obstruct the officer in the course of his duties. Eventually the female assaulted the officer by hitting him in the face. The officer then placed that female under detention and she escaped from custody. The officer pursued the female on Balam Street into a yard. Upon trying to enter the yard, the officer was prevented or obstructed who pushed the officer several times in the chest. This male person was later learnt to be a police corporal. So, we at the professional standards branch are doing an internal investigation and if it is that there is evidence to substantiate that allegation, that corporal will be placed under disciplinary charges.”
