Belize Police Department Stands Ready to Assist Businesses in Light of Robberies

Chester Williams

As you heard just now, cops were quick to respond and nab the culprits in the robbery at the Scotia Bank Branch on the George Price Highway. Today, Commissioner of Police Chester Williams praised the officers’ good work.  But we asked Williams what can business owners do to avoid becoming targets of robbers. The ComPol announced today that they stand ready to provide security support for businesses in some special instances where they may become targets.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“We do anticipate these activities. We know the fact that people are out there who are frustrated and people are desperate and so while they may not have a job to sustain themselves, people may resort to other activities with a view to sustain themselves and that is one of the reasons why we try our best to be as prepared as we can in policing the different areas. I guess that is one of the reasons why we were strategically located in this area where the robbery occurred to have been able to respond timely and capture those involved. But my advice to business establishments is to try as best as you can not to keep large amount of money in your establishment. Do your deposit at random hours or stagger the hours of your deposit. Try not to allow too many people to know where you keep your money and ensure that you know who you are hiring because sometimes you find that some of these robberies are orchestrated from inside. I have also directed the police that if it is that any business establishments were to ask for police escort in escorting them to the bank to make their deposit, that we must facilitate. So, I want to make the announcement to the business owners that if it is that you feel unsafe, do your deposit and seek assistance from the police and we are going to provide that service to you free of cost. We want that you are safe when you are doing your deposit. If we assist you in that way then it helps us too because if you are robbed then we have to investigate a robbery. You know robberies can turn into injuries and maybe even death. So, we are here to help you with that service to help you do business in a safe environment.”
