Logistics in Place for U.D.P. Leadership Convention

The second leadership convention in five months to determine who will succeed Dean Barrow as the leader of the United Democratic Party is less than two weeks away. On July twelfth, at the ITVET Compound in Belize City, some five hundred and sixty delegates, similar to February ninth, will vote again on who will become leader when the PM retires. The race is now down to   former National Security Minister John Saldivar, Minister Patrick Faber, and Foreign Affairs Minister Wilfred Elrington. Now Saldivar and Faber are criss-crossing the country meeting with delegates but endorsements this time round appear to be more guarded.  U.D.P. Chairman Michael Peyrefitte says that the logistics are in place and the delegates list remains the same, except for two persons.

“The full logistics are in place. July twelfth is the date; it will be at the ITVET. The candidates have all agreed to a certain amount of ground rules and the secretariat will be responsible to ensure that everybody that has a vote goes there and votes safely. We are still in the middle of a pandemic so I don’t think I am telling much tales out of school by saying that it certainly won’t be a grand affair like what we had at the civic centre the last time. To be very subdued out of respect for the need for safety. And we want it to go as quickly as possible and after a couple hours; we should have an idea of who the new leader-elect will be.”

“The delegates list; it’s the same as the last time or they are new people?”

Michael Peyrefitte

“Same as the last time. Possibly only two names have changed. One of those being a delegate who since the last convention passed away; a new delegate will be in that person’s place. And then there was a change in one of the chairmanship of one of the committees that we have. So there will be no more than about two or maybe three different people, but nothing significant from the last list that we had.”
