Cop to be Charged for RTA That involves Oscar Mira

Today Commissioner of Police Chester Williams also fielded question about the RTA involving P.U.P. standard bearer Oscar Mira. Williams noted that the cop in question will be facing some charges, but he also made it clear that Mira could be liable. ComPol Williams also told the press that his office is not targeting Mira because of political affiliations, but they are just following the law.

“Oscar Mira and his accident – the people from his camp are saying that the vehicle was stopped in Hattieville and urged to get off the road by fellow officers. Any knowledge of that?”

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“I have no knowledge of that but if that is the case then the officers in Hattieville would have to answer some questions. Because they shouldn’t have asked the officer to get off the road, they ought to have ensured that he gets off the road and if it is that they found him driving and they believe that he was under the influence, they had a duty to have taken appropriate action which could have even been arresting the police officer for driving with alcohol concentration above the prescribed limit and so professional standards branch is going to look into that. We can say however that we have learnt that the vehicle the officer was in was not licensed or insured. And he will be charged for those offences. He will also be charged for the fact that the vehicle was parked on the road obstructing the free flow of traffic. But contrary to what others are saying the fact that the officer’s vehicle is not licensed and insured that it ought not to have been on the road and therefore it would not have caused the accident. That doesn’t negate the fact that an accident did occur and the other driver could be liable. At this time I am not saying Mr. Mira is liable and at fault because the possibility does exist. I have listed to what he said that the vehicle was in the middle of the road and now if the vehicle is in the middle of the road, it gives you a greater chance to see the vehicle from greater distance as opposed to being on the side of the road.  So, the investigation is ongoing and I would just hope that people stop looking at everything through a political lens. Policing for me is not about politics. It is about doing what is right and in every instant where the police request anybody who has been involved in an accident for a blood or urine specimen and that person refuses, that is an automatic charge. Mr. Mira should be no different than anybody else and I stand by that.”

ComPol Williams also confirmed that a motorist made a report about the vehicle on the highway that night. He says that the cops were on the way to investigate, but by the time they arrived the accident had already happened.
