Land Borders Remain Closed!

Michael Peyrefitte

Unlike the Philip Goldson International Airport, land borders will remain closed. The Attorney General made it abundantly clear that the country’s borders with Mexico and Guatemala will remain close for the foreseeable future, especially since COVID-19 cases in both countries have been drastically increasing. Border jumpers rule remains in effect and, according to Peyrefitte, persons who enter the country illegally will be dealt with to the fullest extent of the law.

Michael Peyrefitte, Attorney General

“The land borders will remain close. So the borders at Chetumal, the border at Guatemala are closed. So the borders within the country where people come in and out of Belize normally to either Mexico or Guatemala, those remain close. Those will not be open. And as the Prime Minister the goal is to have the airport open by August fifteenth. That is the date and of course between now and then there may be more regulations to govern as we go along but for now this is where we stand in terms of the law when we wake Wednesday morning. Cargo flights will still be allowed to come within through the airport. Commercial courier flights, emergency medical, emergency flights approved by myself and Civil Aviation and people who are allowed to come back, Belizean residents, Belizean diplomats, incoming Belizean nationals and foreign diplomats accredited to Belize.  So I want to make it very clear, the borders are closed. If you come in illegally you are committing an offence whether you are a Belizean or not. If you don’t have the permission to come in you will arrested and charge and you could be spending even up to three months in prison.”
