Illegal Honduran Fisher Is Belize’s 24th COVID-19 Patient

Border jumpers are of concern for the spread of the virus.  Belize recorded its twenty-fourth case of COVID-19 on Friday. The patient is a Honduran male who was caught fishing illegally in Belizean waters. He was detained off the coast of Placencia with two other Honduran nationals who have tested negative for the novel coronavirus.  The men were caught by Coast Guard officers and patient twenty-four, like the recent new cases, is asymptomatic. He is currently at the quarantine centre in Dangriga.  According to Director of Health Services, Doctor Marvin Manzanero, eighty-seven samples were tested with only one being positive. Doctor Manzanero told News Five that another patient has recovered leaving Belize with three active cases.

“He was captured fishing illegally as we have made to understand. That is the legal process. We wouldn’t have all the details of that but along with two other Honduran nationals.”

“Are you able to say if he made his way to land or he stayed in the waters?”

“No he was captured by the Coast Guard and so he was brought. Initially as we can, again we are trying to complete the contact tracing in this regard he was brought on to  the Placencia police station, held there before he was transported to the Russell Chiste Stadium in Dangriga which is the quarantine/detention center for the area.”

Hipolito Novelo

“Are you able to say if he enters Belizean waters to fish frequently?”

Dr. Marvin Manzanero

“No. We don’t have the particulars of their illegal activities, first second time or any other particular. We would be concern of any contacts that he may have had while he was here under the quarantine.  His other two colleagues are negative so that is the concern that we have.”
