Belize Will Be Different from Jamaica, Antigua

One more matter from Ask the Expert today…Jamaica added six new cases of COVID-19 to its tally on Sunday, making the cumulative number of confirmed cases totaling six hundred and ninety-six. Five of the cases are imported, with the individuals having arrived on flights from the United States, while one is a contact of an imported case.  The new cases come after Jamaica opened its doors to tourists. In Antigua, several tourists are threatening legal action over the current mandatory coronavirus testing protocols upon arrival to the islands. Prime Minister Gaston Browne said that tourists who tested positive last week did not follow the mandatory quarantine orders and booked flights back to the United States the day after receiving the diagnosis. Attorney General Michael Peyrefitte made a distinction between Belize, Antigua, and Jamaica. He said that Belize will insist on stricter mechanisms.

“The difference between Belize, Antigua and Jamaica is that Belize will be insisting come August fifteenth on far stricter mechanism than Antigua and Jamaica were insisting on. To me they were hurriedly trying to open their and their tourism sector because they were losing a lot of revenue. We believe that while we are losing the revenue and our people need to get back to work to earn. It would be even more devastating if we open it recklessly or with test that are easy acceptable by travelers but not safe for them to come to Belize and spread that disease. We are not saying that it is going to be one hundred proof or a thousand percent proof. However it will be the best that we could possible do in the circumstance and at some point we have to open up and at some point we have to try to return to as normal as we can return because we can be COVID free and starve and we can’t allow that either. We have to learn to move along with COVID at this point with certain restrictions in place.”
