The Financial Position of the Council as Recovers from COVID-19

COVID-19 affected many businesses, including the town and city councils across the country; in Belize City, the revenue stream trickled as services came to a screeching halt, though CitCo provided some services virtually.  But as the economy reopened, the revenue flow of the Belize City Council picked up. Mayor Bernard Wagner spoke to the media today about the financial position of the council. He says that the council is in the process of reinstating its four hundred and sixty employees, and no one was terminated due to COVID-19.

“It could never be fully recovered, but you keep working at it. Since reopening gradually, like I told you the last time we met, that we are looking at the numbers. We are doing a phased in approach. Our numbers have continuously improved and so we recognised that we cannot forever have our staff being on half salary; some of them on seventy-five percent salary. So based on our projection and our revenue inflows, we are looking to reinstate full salary for the fifteenth of July payroll.   Based on those numbers, based on cash inflows improving from where it was ending of May to now, we have seen where we are not beginning to get back to some level of normalcy. Not where we wanna be, not where it was in previous years, but gradually putting us in a position to be able to provide all the necessary services that a city require. The councillors were on half salary. They will revert back as well. And again the difference with us is that those paydays that they did not receive that was deferred; it’s not forego. So at some point in time, we will remit that back to those staff cause we know they have their own obligations as well and we want to be sure that we look out for our staff.”
