Briceño says Barrow Playing Politics with Loan Money

John Briceño

According to Opposition Leader John Briceño, Prime Minister Dean Barrow is playing politics. Briceño says that the Prime Minister is either not understanding the P.U.P.’s point or he was being disingenuous.

John Briceño, Leader of the Opposition

“The point that I am trying to make and maybe the Prime Minister was not listening intently that I believe, we believe that any government that is coming to the end of their term should not have that moral responsibility to go and borrow this kind of money. About three months from now we are going to have an election. They need a new mandate. Any government, be it P.U.P., U.D.P.. Any kind of government. When you look a hundred and eighty million dollars just as they are existing. Where it is necessary? That is not the point. The point I am making that here we are burdening the government with all of this money. At the very least the government should do the right thing to call the elections and get a fresh mandate. The next point Madam Speaker when you borrow from the bank and let’s say you have to pay a thousand dollars per the month. The bank would tell you, you know Madam Speaker you have been a good client or I know you are going through a hard time you don’t have to pay me one thousand dollars. You can pay me five hundred dollars per month. That freezes five hundred dollars for you. You might not have the entire five hundred but you may have a hundred or three hundred dollars more. The point we are making and again I think the Prime Minister is an intelligent man so I think he is being disingenuous when he is saying that we are not understanding the concept with the money from C.D.B. because it is easing them from paying a loan. When you do that then that means now that the government has some extra money, maybe not the entire amount, but some extra money that they can use for to play politics with. That is the point we are trying to make and it seems the Prime Minister has a difficulty on either understanding that or trying to spin his way through it.”
