Are Accommodations Ready for the August 15th Reopening?

August fifteenth – that’s the day the P.G.I.A. is reopening as Belize opens back up for international tourism business. As we’ve been reporting, tourism stakeholders were divided about the reopening of the airport, but many wanted to see a date sooner rather than later. The Belize Hotel Association polled its members and most wanted an August first reopening. Well, as you heard on Thursday, they got an August fifteenth date and President of the B.H.A., Ted Tejada says that their members are happy. But are they ready for the reopening?

Ted Tejada, President, Belize Hotel Association

“With the news that the Prime Minister gave yesterday that the airport will reopen August fifteenth there was a lot of joy within the industry. As you know, most of the hotels continue to be closed at this moment and continue to suffer economically. So, they want to rehire employees and want to bring them back. And so I think that has been good news for all of us.”

“Are hotels ready for this reopening?”

Ted Tejada

“Based on the survey that we did, even though ninety-eight percent of the hotels said they wanted the airport open on August first; seventy-eight percent of them said that they were ready. The other thirty four conceded that they were not ready. So, to us, it showed us that even though they were looking at the airport open, they were true to themselves and said we at this point are not ready. But definitely BTB started their training as early as Monday of this week with the gold standards that they are asking all of us to have in place prior to opening. There is going to be a certification for all of these hotels. So, definitely, we are championing that at the BHA, helping all our members. We have put together a PowerPoint presentation with what they need to do. We are helping them in getting that process ready.”
