Roaring Creek Gets New Police Station

The village of Roaring Creek has been growing exponentially and has morphed into a vibrant gateway to the capital.   Today, the top brass of the police department was in the community for the inauguration of a new police station. Built in a record time, the facility is well equipped to cope with the challenges of crime in the surrounding villages. It will be manned by thirty-six officers. Here is New Five’s Hipolito Novelo with a report.

This is the old Roaring Creek Police Station. It sits below the newly constructed Roaring Creek Bridge. The building itself is worn and is it difficult to access, making crime fighting challenging. The Roaring Creek Police Station first opened its doors in 1950. Back then the station was manned by only one police officer.  As years went by, the surrounding community grew and the demands of the police station also increased.

“The Roaring Creek Police Station jurisdiction consists of all villages from Black Man Eddy Village to Cotton Tree and From Camalote to Valley of Peace.   In 2013, the Roaring Creek Police Station was upgraded to provide all the services that the other district police stations offer.”

Fast-forward to 2020, this is the newly constructed police station. CEO in the Ministry of Works Errol Gentle says that the new Roaring Creek Police Station was made possible under the George Price Rehabilitation Project which is funded by the Inter-American Development Bank, the European Union Caribbean Investment Facility and the Government of Belize. It was built by Johan Construction and Engineering Limited for just under half a million dollars.

“The lovely building provides the department with a much larger facility located on a higher elevation which will not be prone to flooding. The new police station was constructed by Johan Construction and Engineering Limited in a record time of nine months even while dealing with the effects of the State of Emergency brought on by COVID-19 pandemic at a cost of four hundred and seventy nine thousand, five hundred and ninety two dollars and seventy two cents.”

The almost half a million dollars structural investment will allow for future expansion. The two storey-cement structure comes fully equipped with jail cells, working stations, a fenced compound and most importantly, thirty-six police officers under the command of ASP Denroy Barrow.  The composition of the formation has also been updated.

“This new police station will now be staffed with an investigation section unit which will provide for greater accessibility of trained and experience investigators during the time of major incident. A community oriented policing unit which will be tasked to improve the system of collaboration with the community, a family unit which will be tasked to work with families affected by domestic violence and an intelligence analysis unit which will be tasked to investigate who is committing crime, how when and why and to provide timely intelligence to the station’s commander in order to help stop or curb crimes.”

Crime to the Roaring Creek Police Formation has always been a challenge but with a fully equip station, officers here will be able to fully dispense their capabilities.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“If you would recall the different murders that happened in the Belmopan Area last year majority of those murders occurred in the Roaring Creek jurisdiction and so we believe that we the addition of an investigator to the police station and the additional police officers we will be able to better contain the crime problem. I am sure that you can attest to the fact this year we have seen a significant reduction in major crime in the Roaring Creek Area and that is attributed to the fact that we have one, increased the number of police officers, two, we have offered more services to the people of Roaring Creek including the services of a dedicated detective who is assigned to this area to focus on major crimes in this area.   I don’t want to speak too quickly, but the Roaring Creek area has not recorded a murder for this year, which is historic.”
