COVID on the Rise in Guatemala & Mexico

Marvin Manzanero

One of the major reasons why border jumpers are a concern for the ministry is because they are coming from neighbouring countries where COVID-19 cases are on the rise. The numbers in Guatemala and Mexico have been increasing in the last few days – and those neighbouring municipalities are a growing concern. Doctor Marvin Manzanero shares how COVID-19 has been impacting our neighbours. He notes that while Belize has been recording a few cases in the last couple days, these are isolated cases and doesn’t signal a second wave of the virus in Belize.

“Also to note, because we are in two border entry points, we are in two situations that we are following neighbouring Othon P. Blanco, where is the municipality where Chetumal is found. Up to twelve midday today had reported a total of four hundred and three cases with two hundred and forty-nine of those being active. And they are having an average of six point two percent case fatality rate, so that is based on the amount of people they have identified. Guatemala in their report earlier today talks about a potential crumbling of the health system if the numbers continue to escalate at the rate they have been in the last couple of weeks. They reported a total and this keeps changing in that I have already had to change this figure three times, thirteen thousand seven hundred and sixty-nine cases is what Guatemala has with five hundred and forty-seven deaths related to COVID-19. For the Belize situation, it is still classified as sporadic cases. We wouldn’t really classify what we have as a second wave because the last five have all been stand alone cases, if you will, they are not being linked. They are all by themselves. They are all imported cases. Three of those are people coming from ship or plane and two people caught entering the border, one south and one west. And that doesn’t constitute as wave.”
