No Vaccine for COVID-19!

Back to today’s Ask the Expert’s Webcast…while not enough is known about the vertical transmission as yet, what health officials do know is that there is no treatment for COVID-19 on the market. While there were reports of exploring a steroid for treatment of potential cases that hasn’t materialized. And another point that medical professionals are certain of is that there is no vaccine being used for this virus. So, as per the advice of Dr. Marvin Manzanero, for now we have to get used to COVID-19 being a part of our reality and plan accordingly. Here’s how he explains it.

Dr. Marvin Manzanero, Director of Health Services

“There is also no specific vaccine. We need to say that. And based on what is happening over the last couple of weeks with what we know of the virus, it doesn’t seem that we are going to go back to where we were prior to SARS-COVID2 unless there is a vaccine. And why? This is very important – the recent data seems to suggest that the immunity, which means if I become infected, I am not going to be  to produce enough antibodies for a sustained period. It would seems to be that it is only going to be for a period of months and after that it would mean that I would be susceptible to a new infection from the same virus. So, immunity doesn’t seem to be a lifelong immunity and it would seem to follow the pattern of other flu viruses. Although, it can be compared to other flu viruses because this is more contagious and has a higher fatality rate. And if that is the case then we could be facing a cyclical element which means that every year you can have potential cases with all the situations that we now know.  So, in light of all this evolving information that we have. We need to be aware that SARS-COVID2 is not going to go anywhere. So, we need to continue prepare ourselves. Our own local personal plan – what happens if I become COVID-19 positive?  What happens if somebody in my family is positive? What am I going to do in my family, in my home, in my community to ensure that there is no further spread and that we take care of those cases in a timely fashion. Just like when you talk about a hurricane plan, I think we all need to start internalizing what our personal plan will be in terms of COVID-19.”
