CitCo Hosts a Training for Small Business Owners

An initial group of ten small business owners were hosted today and will be engaged in three days of training at City Hall in Belize City. Dubbed the Accelerator Program Training Session, the Local Economic Development Department of the Belize City Council is working with a total of twenty participants who will learn about the process of setting up their businesses, including registration, trade licensing and ensuring competitiveness during this economic downturn.  Councillor for Economic Development, Small Business, Trade and Investment, Javier Castellanos shares more details.

Javier Castellanos, Councillor for Economic Development, Belize City Council

“It’s what we call accelerator businesses that we are promoting here because we realise that the small businesses are the backbone of the economy. So we are trying to keep that going, especially at the time of the new norms.  We are asking the public to be creative, be involved with your council and see what policies they are making to suit you in your business. And the takeaway is that we have a new norm so you have to be creative and try make businesses from your home, from your ideas. One of the main things that I am talking about is that fortunately and unfortunately, it brings competition to everybody now. Everybody can be a business person, entrepreneur. So if you have the goal, if you have the ideas, if you have the determination to fail and come back and if you have to fail again and eventually you become successful. That’s the point.”

Javier Castellanos

“So what types of businesses are we talking about?”

Javier Castellanos

“We have some people who are in arts and craft, we have some people who are in restaurants and we have people who are different small businesses like panades shops or welding. The training is to advance them to understand how a business works. You have to look at location. If you are in a location, you must know the needs of the people there, what you can offer them for your business to be successful.”
