Politics Time Again, Omar Figueroa Drops Out of U.D.P. Leadership Race

Turning to political news…the United Democratic Party is heading to a second leadership convention on July twelfth, after within three days of his election, John Saldivar had to step down in February amid the Lev Dermen scandal.  Tonight, the political race is now down to only four aspirants as Cayo North Area Representative Omar Figueroa has since withdrawn his candidacy.  According to U.D.P. chairman Michael Peyrefitte, all registered candidates, including former Deputy Party Leader Patrick Faber, Pickstock Area Rep Wilfred Elrington, former Belize City Mayor Darrell Bradley and Saldivar are still in the race.

“On Friday, Minister Figueroa indicated to me that he would no longer be vying for the leadership of the U.D.P.  He didn’t give me any reason whatsoever.  He just called me and told me that that would be his decision and so now we’re down to four people vying for the leadership of the party on July twelfth.”

“Now those four, are you able to say if those four applications have been accepted and approved?”

Michael Peyrefitte

“Yes, they have been accepted and approved from the time the deadline came and went.  Remember we were to have this convention from in April but it had to be put off because of COVID, but now we believe that given the fast approaching time of November, that we need to get our leadership in order for the future and so we decided that July twelfth would be the best date and all candidates that had registered before will be put on the ballot except for Minister Figueroa, as we just said.”
