Misunderstanding in Taylor’s Alley Resolved

The Mesopotamia Father’s Day Unity Basketball Game between once rival members of the George Street and Taylor’s Alley Gangs went off without a hitch on Sunday. The game was held on the basketball court off Orange Street in Taylor’s Alley and there is confirmation that a truce of sorts was established between these two major gangs in the city.  Later in the evening, however, a group of officers entered the area. A live Facebook video captured about a dozen uniformed officers and others in camouflage gear descending at the basketball court; some armed with high-powered rifles. Residents disclaim that social distancing rules were not being adhered to. While he did not comment on the viral video, ComPol Chester Williams did explain that the CYDP and the Police have been working with the gangs in the area to uphold peace.

“After the gang state of emergency lapsed, one of the agreements between all those gang members who were involved was that they were going to put down the guns and uphold the peace. You would also know that in that same process, we were able to remove over thirty firearms out of the hands of these various gang members. And in continuing with ensuring that the city remains peaceful, CYDP and Brother Nuri have been exceedingly busy dialoguing with the different groups with a view to address any situation that may evolve. And that, I must say, has been going quite well. Every day we brief our officers when they go out. And yes, as much as we are seeing that calm in the city, we do out daily, expecting the worst. And the officers do understand what needs to be done from a police standpoint to ensure that we do our part to facilitate the continuing of the peace and we are going to continue to do that. As you would know, I firmly believe that we cannot eradicate the enormity of the gangs by full scale policing; you must have that balance in terms of looking at conflicts that may arise and see how we can diffuse them before they reach that stage where people begin to get shot or killed and that is the objective that we try to pursue every day.”
