BDF investigating escape from quarantine facility in the south!

And finally on the topic of B.D.F for tonight, the press also took the opportunity to ask General Ortega about the issue of the border jumpers escaping from quarantine facilities. There were two incidents, one at the ITVET over a month ago and more recently in the south. The soldiers, as explained by the B.D.F. provide perimeter security, thus they remain outside of the facilities. General Stephen Ortega had this to say:

Brigadier General Steven Ortega, Commander, BDF

“The one in Corozal we have dealt with, I mean the people escaped and we have dealt with that.”

Reporter

“Dealt with it how?”

Brigadier General Steven Ortega

“Disciplinary.”

Reporter

“How many soldiers were disciplined in that regard and are they still performing these same duties?”

Brigadier General Steven Ortega

Brigadier General Steven Ortega

“No, they are not there anymore, they have moved from there. Now, concerning the one down in Dangriga that is something that we are still investigating to see what factors led to that escape and what damages we need to put in place to mitigate further something like that from happening again.”

Reporter

“So in the one relating to Corozal is it a case were the soldiers were paid off? What happened?”

Brigadier General Steven Ortega

“The people escaped.”

Reporter

“So they weren’t sufficiently guarded…”

Brigadier General Steven Ortega

“Not really, what happed is that I don’t know if you know the ITVET in Corozal? The physical structure of the place at the time they had added some additional personnel and because of the physical dimensions, we didn’t have sufficient troops there to man it at that time. The one in Corozal we had a discussion with the Ministry of Health in terms of narrowing the number of buildings that we use in order for us to provide the adequate man power to suffice the security.”

Andrea Polanco

“So you didn’t find that your officer on guard failed in carrying out their duties?”

Brigadier General Steven Ortega

“It was just the numbers, it was a numbers game.”

General Ortega also said that four B.D.F. Soldiers were put into quarantine because of patient twenty, the border jumper in Toledo. Ortega says that the four soldiers had close contact with the patient and as a result will remain in isolation for another week to complete the fourteen days.
